Lisa Barone, co-founder of Outspoken Media, recently wrote a list of several best practices for email marketing for the Small Business Trends blog. Naturally, we loved it. We’d like to review what Lisa said and add a few email marketing tips for small business that are just as critical to entrepreneurs.

Be Personal: Although some would think email marketing is all about one-way communication, it’s actually a great two-way communication tool. It’s important to design and send emails that speak directly to your customers in a way that truly resonates with their interests.

Know Your Distribution Timing: When it comes to email marketing, yes, there is a science to it. Lisa rightly points out that few companies should send an email at 6 p.m. on a Friday, and it’s important to test different distribution times during the week to see what works best for you and your customers.

Subject Line: If we’ve said this once, we’ve said it a million times. The subject line is everything in email marketing. A catchy subject line can make your email campaign while a dull or spammy one can break you.

Preview Emails: Lots of people use their preview panes on their email programs. When designing your emails, it’s important to keep this in mind so that your important messages, branding and call to action are all accessible in the preview pane.

Measurement: Clearly, why spend lots of time designing and implementing an email marketing campaign if you’re not going to take the time to measure its success. Test, test, and test some more to find the right mix of messages, call to action and design that hits on all cylinders.

No Spam: By all means, cut the spam. Only send emails that are relevant to people who have opted in to your email list.

But here are a few more email marketing tips for small business that are critical to entrepreneurs:

Develop Your Email List With Care: You have 100,000 people on your email list. Great. But if only 15 percent of them are qualified customers, you are wasting your time. Always spend the time to refine your list so that everyone is a good and qualified lead. Remove people that are dead weight and not relevant to your messages.

Integrate With Other Marketing: Use your existing online properties and social media together. Include website pages, Twitter and Facebook URLs in your email marketing so people know how to connect with all your online properties. Be sure to do this with any direct mails you send, too.

Don’t Be Too Salesy: Of course, it’s important to turn your email marketing into sales. But don’t be too pushy in your email marketing or else everyone on your list will opt out. Walk a fine line between sales, promotion, information and entertainment.

Make It Professional, Not Flashy: It doesn’t matter if you once saw a website or an email with every bell and whistle possible. Always be true to your brand and stay professional with the design of your emails.

Important Phrases of the Year: You want to avoid certain phrases or words in your subject line that will send your email directly to the spam folder (like FREE and TRIAL), but you also want to get people’s attention depending on the time of year. Phrases like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Back-To-School are important.

Ready For Success? All entrepreneurs, small business owners and franchisees should be ready for the best-case scenario. There’s nothing worse than sending out that killer email and having a fantastic response, only to not be able to fulfill and stay true to your word. Be ready for an overwhelming response so that you can under promise and over-deliver to your customers.

Summer is my favorite time of year but it’s nearly impossible to stay focused all the time. But we must, we have to! That is our mission fellow marketers!!

I can’t make money online because I lack the knowledge. Learning is the answer! No one born with knowledge of any kind! Everything we know we have learned! And if we want to start something new you have to spend a good time researching the subject. Back to school.

In internet marketing you teach others to make money online (by teaching them to teach others…). If you sell cars you can sell only BMW’s? You can sell everything people are wiling to buy! Even if they don’t want to buy you can persuade them to spend their money in order to make a good profit for you! Down in the basics – persuading people to buy means money.

Better to do something than nothing at all. In Internet Marketing you won’t succeed without hard work – get with it – live with it.

You can sell only with creative or sexy ads. You can sell this type of ads too but your ad and product must be informative in the first place! People don’t buy sexiness (in non-adult markets) or creativeness (in non-design.. etc. markets) When people pay money they want to get information from you – you must it to them!

But remember that in marketing you make the rules! No one can say what well surely work out! Trial and error! But you will succeed if you will put enough efforts in it!

• Avoid hyphens. Hyphens are only allowed when you are making a web page to increase your rankings in SERP. If you are choosing domain name for your main page – hyphens = a big no!
• Short name = good name. Short domain names are easy to remember! www.easydomains.com or www.iwillfindyouagreatdomain.com… I think you got the point! Sometimes very long domain names can be good for your business because if your page is very good but it has a long domain name people will surely bookmark it!
• When picking domain name for SEO purposes make sure it is the same as your targeted keyword, this will surely bring loads of traffic because you will be able to rank high in Google quite easy.
• Try not to use complex words in domain name. Accommodate, changeable, grateful, misspell. Try to type them fast. Pick your domain name and try to write it down for 50 times and check how many times you misspelled it!
• Check competition. Having 10`000 competitors is always better than having 10`000`000.

There is no easy way to pick a domain name. Spend good time on it. Don’t go with an .. okay.. domain name – pick the best you can get!

The first thing what you want to do is to find product to recommend to others. If this will be your first campaign then search in the niches you are interested in because then in it will be much easier to focus on your goals. Don’t chose bad products! Stick with ethics! I bet you have red a lot of recommendations on the Internet. Stick with the rules! Don’t be aggressive, Don’t put yourself in the place of God itself when talking to your customers etc etc.

Try to solve problems that other people might have rather than try to hard sell your product. Be as helpful as you can be but remember not to tell too much! If you will tell them too much their problems will be solved without buying the product you promote! So warm them up and make them feel that your recommended product will surely help them to solve the problems they have!

The third and the step that will determine your success rate is adverting. You must spread your word to the crowd! Believe me – there are a lot of people wiling to buy the product you promote the only thing you need to do is tell them why to buy exactly from you! Others are selling products on the same niche or even the same products since you are affiliate marketer, so your task is to tell the crowd that only your product is the one that they need!

Three things – niche, recommendation and loud talking! Write them down and stick them where you can see them every day!
